DE-THATCHING
Does your lawn feel bouncy when you walk on it? If it does it may need De-Thatching. Thatch build up is most likely the problem. Generally speaking as a rule you should De-thatch your lawn when the thickness of the thatch is half an inch or more. To check the thickness, dig up a small square of lawn about 3 inches deep and see how deep the brown layer is between the dirt and the grass blade.
De-Thatching in the Skowhegan area is typically better off being done in the mid to late spring or early fall. This is the time of year when the turf is actively growing, the grass will repair from damage quickly.
Thatch conditions are dependent on soil types or whether a lawn has been over-watered or over-fertilized. Grass types actually make a difference, grasses such as Bermuda grass, bentgrass, and Kentucky bluegrass all grow thatch quickly and may need De-Thatching yearly. Other grasses, such as perennial ryegrass and tall fescue don't produce much thatch and may not need De-Thatching for years.
A note of caution, avoid doing any De-Thatching when weeds are germinating to prevent spreading them to your lawn! And if your looking to apply any herbicide wait until after you De-Thatch!
